Spring cleaning is at the forefront of our cleaning routine this time of year, and we all need simplified ways to do it concisely and easily. That said, we often forget some of the most essential overlooked areas.

Moreover, we all want the best tips and shortcuts to help us along the way. Whether you live in a home or an apartment, spring cleaning is a great way to move effortlessly into summer mode and put the winter days behind you.

Do You Overlook These Essential Areas To Clean During Spring Cleaning?

So, you feel ready to take on some of your spring cleaning chores and feel the vibe of the changing season upon you. Well, that’s great and very motivational, but it’s important not to forget some of the most overlooked areas of our homes.

Before you roll up your sleeves and dig in, it’s a good idea to review this checklist to ensure you don’t forget to clean some of the most essential areas of your space. Of course, having the basic cleaning product essentials is equally as important.

I’m a clean freak, and I proudly say so. It’s how I keep my spirit upbeat and start my day with a neat and organized home. While spring cleaning is not something we necessarily enjoy, it can help keep our mood and motivation on point.

After all, we know how it feels to wake up to a messy, unorganized space and how that can affect the rest of our days. So, don’t feel overwhelmed at the thought that you might forget to clean some of the most essential areas of your home.

After decades of cleaning my home, I learned how to do the job efficiently and am excited to share it with you. Trust me, I love a good DIY shortcut or cleaning advice as much as the next guy, and I made sure to document everything that works and doesn’t serve me.

1 – Mattress Cleaning – It’s Not As Hard As You Think

Not many of us think about disinfecting and cleaning our mattresses, but it’s one of the most important spring cleaning tasks. Typically, I like to clean mine at least twice a year, if not more. So, how do you do it easily and efficiently? I discovered a vacuum cleaner designed to clean mattresses a few years ago.

What You Need To Do:

1. First, strip everything off your bed to expose your mattress.
2. Next, take your current vacuum cleaner and remove the extender wand so it becomes a handheld vacuum cleaner.
3. Vacuum your entire mattress, ensuring you flip it over to do both sides. Don’t forget to clean the sides as well.
4. Then, take Lysol Fabric Disinfectant Spray. It also sanitizes and works as an antibacterial. Make sure you spray it down well and include both sides.
5. Let it air out for at least two hours before making your bed.
6. Now is a good time to rotate your mattress as well.

I like using a good disinfectant on my mattress. Ideally, this is a good practice, especially during cold and flu season.

2 – Pillows – Yes, All Of Them

Of course, you’ll want to include pillow cleaning in your spring cleaning checklist this year. Yes, that means all of your pillows, not just your bedding.

We all have a sofa and throw pillows from the bedroom to the living room and outdoors. And don’t forget your seat cushions too. If you have any in your car, you’ll want to include them.

Ideally, you’ll want to ensure all your pillows, seat cushions, and throw pillows are all clean and disinfected.

What You Need To Do:

1. Make sure you read the care labels for proper cleaning.
2. Most of the time, you can throw your bedding pillows in the washer and dryer.
3. Keep your bedding pillows clean year-round and wash them regularly, especially during spring cleaning.
4. For throw pillows, make sure to read the care labels. Some of them you can throw in your washer, and others require dry cleaning.
5. It’s also good to use Lysol Fabric Disinfectant Spray and give all your pillows a give them a good spray down.

7. For those sensitive to fragrance, use a fragrance-free detergent, especially on your bedding.

So, there’s go—easy peasy, nice, clean, disinfected. I have used pillow protectors for decades and will continue to do so. They help keep my pillow clean, new, and safe.

3 – Dishwashers – They Can Get Nasty Fast – A Spring Cleaning Must

If you have a dishwasher at home, I’m sure you think they self-clean, right? Well, they don’t- not fully. Furthermore, if you use it daily, as I do, you’ll want to ensure that you do your best to keep it in good shape.

There are several methods for cleaning your dishwasher. Below, you find my preferred method of cleaning.

Of course, read your dishwasher manual for proper cleaning instructions.

1. First, remove the bottom rack so you can access the inside.
2. Remove the filter and wash it thoroughly with dish soap. You can use an old toothbrush or these cleaning brushes. I love them and use them for many things around the house, especially during spring cleaning time.
3. Next, remove the spray arm at the dishwasher’s bottom. You might need to give it a good tug to pull it free. Give it a good cleaning,
4. Then, cleaning the door gaskets. Those are the rubber seals along the door. They might look nasty with caked-up food and nasty stuff, but it needs to happen. You can use paper towels or an old washcloth for this.
5. Run A Wash Cycle: Cleaning with a cup of white vinegar will remove odors. It will also clean any remaining food, grease, or soap residue.

Pour 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar into the reservoir, or place a small bowl filled with vinegar on the bottom rack and run an empty cycle to remove mineral build-up.

4 – Dryer Vents And Thorough Cleaning– Safety Cleaning Must

Removing the lint from the dryer screen doesn’t begin to cover proper cleaning. Instead, I hire a company at least every 2-3 years to clean my dryer vent professionally. Why? Because the tubing extends outside, which is over 20 feet long. Doing so ensures a thorough cleaning and fire safety prevention!

Of course, you can DIY it yourself if you choose to.

1 – First, detach the tubing from the back of the dryer and vacuum it. You can use a brush or this essential dryer cleaning kit to help. The goal is to dislodge any lint trapped inside.

2 – Next, check your outside vent to ensure it’s clean of lint and any outdoor debris. If you can’t remove it to clean it, use a vacuum to grab as much debris as possible.

While your dryer is out, vacuum and clean any debris under and around it. Also, give the lint screen a good soapy washing.

5 – Clean Your Bathroom Fan & Vents

I’m sure your bathroom fans can use a good cleaning. I know they are always the last thing I’m interested in doing. While they might seem like an out of sight out of mind thing, they should be a part of your spring cleaning routine.

What You Need To Do:

1. First, turn the power off. You can do this at your breaker box. I prefer to turn the power off for safety reasons.
2. Next, remove the cover. Pull it down and squeeze the metal mounting clips on each side.
3. You can disconnect the wires to the light or leave the light intact and clean around it.
4. Clean the vent cover with soapy water. Make sure you let it dry well before placing it back.
5. Vacuum inside to remove debris, and then use a microfiber cloth to wipe any remaining dust and dirt.
6. Some folks like using compressed air to clean their bathroom vents, but it’s up to you. It’s all up to what you prefer.

Now, your bathroom fan and vent are clean, and you probably won’t need to clean them again until your next spring cleaning adventure.

6 – Wash or Replace Curtains and Liners

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to wash or replace your curtains. I tend to forget about them and always create reminders to take my curtains down for washing or dry cleaning.

Thankfully, many of them you can throw in your washer and dry on a gentle cycle. While doing that, I always wipe down the walls behind them. I like using my Swiffer Duster for this chore.

Of course, you’ll want to do the same if you have a shower curtain liner. Fortunately, liners are cheap enough that you can affordably replace them. If not, a good wash cycle will do the job.

7 – Baseboards – A Spring Cleaning Must

While we all dread cleaning our baseboards, spring cleaning is finally the perfect time to do them.

Some prefer washing them with a wet rag, but I like using my Swiffer Duster. With the extender pole, I don’t need to bend so much; it works great at removing dust.

At times, you’ll see paint chipping and marks on them. You can always grab your paint and touch them up quickly if you do. I always keep a set of inexpensive paintbrushes on hand for tasks like this. They work great for touching up the walls as well.

7 – Replacing Toilet Seats

If one thing in my bathroom drives me up the wall, it’s a grimy toilet seat. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to replace them. Fortunately, it’s a simple task and something you can DIY.

8 – Washing Makeup Brushes

Yes, I add washing my makeup brushes to my spring cleaning list. While we should clean them at least every month, you can give them a good deep cleaning during your cleaning routine.

You can use a good Electric Makeup Brush Cleaner that does the job perfectly and is affordable.
