2 minute read

When I was much younger, I remember my dad really loved only a handful of bands.

For him to tap his feet and move, it had to be either a folksy, introspective track by The Beatles or Simon & Garfunkel or something a bit more dance-worthy by either the Pointer Sisters or Sister Sledge. He'll probably hate the fact that I'm sharing this with the internet right now (so if you're reading right now, Dad, you can stop now and go for another walk with the dogs), but I very vividly remember him singing along to Sister Sledge's "We Are Family" loudly in the car, high notes and all, with the most adorable dance moves that only a dad can muster. At the time, I might have laughed (perhaps later rolled my eyes as an insufferable teenager), but now, as a mid-30 something, it's such a delightful memory, one that always makes me smile whenever I hear the opening notes of what must be a disco track.

As you might have guessed, today's playlist is of the disco state of mind, specifically New York disco era -- all the glitz, all the sex appeal, all the fashion, all the lavishly decadent debauchery, all the excess! Think Studio54, think Andy Warhol, think Bianca Jagger, think Diana Ross and think about the playground New York must have been -- an undeniable hay day for fashion designers, artists, musicians, writers, free spirits.

I don't often romanticize the 70s perhaps in the way I do other eras (like the 40s and 60s) and that's not intentional on my part. There's so much I adore about the 70s -- something about it felt so electrically charged. Wild and untamed.

Anyway, enough from me, I hope this playlist puts a pep in your step today and a smile on your face. I, for one, am heading uptown on the 1 train to run a few errands and I'm excited to sing a little "We Are Family" along the way.
